José Vela Zanetti was born in Milagros (Burgos) in 1913. He began his artistic training in León with Manuel Bartolomé Cossío in Madrid and with José Ramón Zaragoza, completing his training in Italy. An outstanding muralist, he also participated in the founding of the National School of Fine Arts in Santo Domingo, as he lived in America while in exile during the Spanish Civil War. Known for his portraits of peasants, he reflects post-war rural Spain, its complicated way of life and heroic subsistence. This lithograph shows a peasant couple embracing in a gesture of complicity and affection, in a style influenced by the neo-cubism of Daniel Vázquez Díaz.
